4th Grade

Plant ID

In this unit, students dive into the incredible diversity of Pacific Northwest plants and learn to see the natural world with new attention and curiosity. They begin by exploring the basics of botany and practicing real plant identification using a dichotomous key. From there, they look more closely—literally—using leaves to investigate mathematical symmetry, uncovering surprising patterns in nature. Students also take on the role of researchers as they explore the cultural histories and human uses of local plants through an ethnobotany study. Finally, they bring science and creativity together through leaf-based artwork that highlights the unique traits of the species they've studied. The result is a well-rounded, hands-on journey into the science, stories, and beauty of regional plants.
